Sammy the dog on his favorite bed

Sammy the dog on his favorite bed.

The front door was open on a rainy day, which provided some nice soft light that I supplemented with a little bit of flash. The photo was taken with my Nikon D5100 and Nikon DX 35mm 1.8 lens at f/1.8, 1/100th shutter speed and ISO 160.

Some people may have issues with the composition -- i.e. saying that Sam should be more prominent. But I wanted to play with light and the deep shadows in the rest of the room. The goal was to isolate Sammy with a really shallow depth-of-field and keep the shadows dark (I could have lightened them up quite a bit in processing but didn't).

Photo may work better in black and white:

The trickiest part with dog photos -- at least with my dog -- is getting good light on his eyes as Sam doesn't like cameras and usually looks away. I usually just have to resort to patience; I also used the Nikon D5100's flash function to reduce red-eye and it seemed to work (Press information button, press it again and then find that down at the lower left part of the screen that provides all the shooting data).

Please see my SmugMug page for more of my work; prints are also available beginning at $11 for an 8 x 12.
