Finch, color versus black and white

My big Xmas gift from my partner: a new finch feeder for our backyard. The idea is to attract birds that let me practice taking pics and, in particular, practice my focus skills.

The funny thing is for the past five weeks the feeder has just sat there with the birds completely ignoring it. They would sit on the ground and feed on seed but wouldn't come near the thing. Then last Friday -- boom! -- it's been finchpalooza. I have no idea why they came around.

Took the photo yesterday while taking breaks from cleaning the basement and probably contracting some heretofore undiscovered disease that thrives in basement dust. As per usual I processed two different ways. Naturally I like the black and white better despite the bird being very colorful.

My partner says I'm full of bunk and the color one is better.

Maybe. I don't know. I'm just a dude with a cheap camera and telephoto lens, in this case the Nikon D5100 and the Nikon 70-300mm telephoto lens that was mounted on a tripod. I shot in RAW and processed in Lightroom using the VSCO slide film presets that I dig.

My photos are available as prints at very reasonable prices, including mounted options that are ready for hanging. More info here. Please feel free to check out my SmugMug site for all my work.
