Los Angeles River after a storm

Los Angeles River after a winter rain.
Los Angeles River after a winter rain, color version.

Took a nature walk after work today down to the good ol' Los Angeles River/Catheter. Brought along my new Hoya nine-stop neutral density filter to see how it worked -- as the river was finally flowing at more than a trickle.

Verdict: pretty cool! The filter allows you to shoot at slow shutter speeds, which is great for smoothing out water or getting silky, interesting skies. The above shots were taken at f/8 for 15 seconds at ISO 100 with my Nikon D5100 and Nikon DX 10-24mm wide angle lens.

Black-and-white or color version?  I like them both but favor the b&w a tad more. I made that version in the demo version of Silver Efex Pro2 from NIK. The color version was processed in Lightroom 4 with VSCO film presets.

Please feel free to check out my SmugMug site for all my work. For prints and licensing info on any of the above photos, please hit the "see larger" link and then go to "buy."
