Los Angeles skyline at sunset, part 3

Downtown Los Angeles skyline at sunset as seen from Elysian Park, black and white version.

I took the above pair in Elysian Park on Friday evening -- I haven't been able to get out of town much lately, so I've been scouting some urban landscapes. This vantage point is certainly better than the one I posted the other day and provides a more encompassing view than this one in the heart of downtown with a much closer view.

I like posting the photos that I capture from these kind of vantage points -- but these are also basically scouting trips, a chance to find good vantage points for future photos. I like the images I got yesterday, but it would be even better if there were more clouds over downtown. In fact, there were a few clouds when I first pulled up:

The scene when I first arrived. I took this one with my Nikon DX 10-24mm wide angle lens. The first two images were taken with the Nikon DX 35mm 1.8 lens. With more clouds and a more spectacular sunset, the wide angle lens may be the way to go in the future.

As far as scouting photo locations goes, Thom Hogan has a good post for his monthly teaching point (scroll down to see it). If you're a hobbyist or amateur and shooting with a DSLR or mirrorless camera, I highly recommend checking out Thom's various sites.

Please feel free to check out my SmugMug site for all my work. For prints and licensing info on any of the above photos, please hit the "see larger" link and then go to "buy."
