Horse along Santa Rosa Creek Road

Horse in meadow along Santa Rosa Creek Road near Cambria.

Yeah, I know. The horse is supposed to be headed into the frame according to most compositional enthusiasts. Oh well, rules are made to be broken.

Flat sky, but those are the breaks. Nonetheless, a strong image.

Shot with my Nikon D5100 and Nikon DX 10-24mm wide angle lens. Processed in Lightroom 4 with an assist from NIK Software's Color Efex Pro. With the bland sky, I thought it was important to amp up the foreground's color and objects.

Another one taken a few minutes earlier, but processed with NIK Analog Efex Pro:

Again, tricky flat light. I usually try to employ a light touch when processing -- unless the light is way off or I think a good composition needs something different to work better.

Such was the case here -- and I think the reason the 'old-time' works is because this is an old farm road that offers a glimpse into rural California and the state's agrarian past.
