Western bluebird

A western bluebird at Lacey Park in San Marino. If you're not too much of a dork, they'll let you get pretty close. Taken with my Nikon Df and the Nikon 70-300mm telephoto lens.

Check out my SmugMug site for more of my work, prints and licensing info. To save 20 percent on the cost of a SmugMug account, please click here. SmugMug lets you customize your page and sell prints and licenses -- unlike, for example, Flickr. I also think photos look better on SmugMug than Flickr or Facebook due to the way those sites compress big files.

Venice Beach skate park

Playing around with the Nikon Df at the Venice Beach skate park last weekend. The focus system is quick -- easy to capture shots of the skateboarders, who are most photogenic.

Kings win the Stanley Cup!

Everyone's a hockey fan in L.A. these days.

The top photo was taken with the Hipstamatic app on my iPhone 5. Here's one from today's parade taken for work with the Nikon Df:

Kayaking Upper Newport Bay

First time out in the new kayak today -- got a sweet deal during REI's spring sale on a Wilderness Tsunami 125, a really nice all-around boat. Lets you get close to wildlife, such as the top photo of a cormorant in Upper Newport Bay in the OC.

Not sure about the type of bird in the middle photo.

Colorful backgrounds for wildlife photography

Just screwing around with the Nikon Df and my trusty Nikon 70-300mm lens over the last week. The bokeh from the lens was pretty good on my old Nikon D5100 -- a cropped sensor camera -- and I think looks better on the Df, a full-frame camera.

Three geese

Shot these at the Huntington recently. Not sure which I like better -- leaning toward the black and white, which I think is a little more artful.

Sam at Table Mountain

Shot this on Friday along the South Fork of Bishop Creek in California's Eastern Sierra. God forbid that Sammy should smile when everything else in the frame is otherwise working -- especially the nice cloud break over the Sierra crest. :)

Eastern Sierra snapshots

These aren't good photos; they're snapshots, the kind of photos someone takes while walking down a trail. The image quality is good -- thank you, new Nikon df camera. The photos also demonstrate the challenge of using that nice expensive wide angle lens in your camera bag.

Gardisky Lake

Gardisky is one of those lakes we had overlooked in nearly 20 years of visiting the Eastern Sierra. We visited because of rumors of 14-inch brook trout -- which we didn't discover on this day. Too breezy.
