Anything helps

Tough photo to take or look at. I sometimes put my camera on the dash of my car and then fire it with a remote trigger. Folks begging for money is commonplace along freeways in the L.A. area -- and maybe has somehow gotten worse in the past few years with homelessness in the region on the rise and real estate and rent prices soaring.

Light rail in Los Angeles and one bus

Work stuff. It was nice to actually have some puffy whites one day. Tired of empty blue skies. Yawn.

Sixty feel below Crenshaw Boulevard in a future Metro Rail station

Shot these for work at the future Leimert Park Station for the Crenshaw/LAX Line -- a light rail line that will run for a stretch under Crenshaw Boulevard. The giant tunneling machine arrived at the station this week after months of digging a mile-long tunnel from Exposition Boulevard to the north.

I shot a lot of these as black and white because: 1) everything is better in black and white!; 2) I find the orange and yellow construction vests to be extremely distracting, and; 3) I was hoping to give the pics the classic feel of the historic black-and-white construction images we've all seen from decades ago. I also wanted the photos to feel spontaneous and as un-PR-like as possible.

And I got a nice write-up for the pics over at Curbed LA. Thank you!

Skateboard kids in DTLA

Stumbled across these chaps while scouting some locations for engagement pics. The sloooow shutter speed was solely the product of my forgetting to change it, the reason these aren't as sharp as I might like -- although the lack of sharpness also gives them a bit of a vintage feel.

Not sure I got the processing right although I am almost to digging the b/w one. Almost.

Batesville & Oldenburg, Indiana

Got to hang out with my buddy and his cameras today in small town Indiana -- Batesville and Oldenburg. Fun walking around and snapping some shots of all the old buildings and other stuff in both towns (they're about halfway between Indy and Cincy). I got to play with a Fuji x100s for the first time. Fun, fun, fun camera that takes crazy sharp pics.

Grand Central Market in DTLA

Finally fled the drekhouse that is the work cafeteria on Friday and took the camera. Was hoping to shoot some stock stuff or have fun with colors but came back with some images I liked better in black and white.

The two photos at top -- of the same guy and same booth -- are the most interesting, I think. Can't decide if I like color or black and white best. Many of the photos suffer from not quite getting close enough. I wanted some candids but was feeling a little shy. One more reason it's important to shoot more, which I haven't been doing.
