Look ma, no wings!: how to take photos of finches in flight
Busy weekend at my finch feeder. I have more than my share of the finches sitting in nearby branches or at the feeder so I thought it was time to man up and get some bird-in-flight pics.

A mule deer in Franklin Canyon Park in the Santa Monica Mountains above L.A.
I could have cropped it, but I like the composition as is. Sky, brush, deer. Simple.
Taken with my Nikon D5100 and Nikon 70-300mm telephoto lens -- a great telephoto for DX cameras that I bought used for $450 from B&H last year. On cropped sensor cameras such as the D5100, the telephoto actually has a reach of 105mm to 450mm.

Rufous hummingbird changing his colors

It wasn't until I was processing the photos that I realized that the color of the feathers around the hummingbird's neck had changed.
At first I thought perhaps the photos were of two different birds. But then I went back and looked at the sequence of 16 shots I took and realized it was the same bird, an adult male (I think).
As it turns out, hummingbirds can change the color of those feathers -- called a gorget -- by flashing them. Cool!
The photos were taken with my Nikon D5100 and Nikon 70-300mm telephoto lens at 300mm, ISO 400, f/5.6 and 1/400 shutter speed. They were shot in RAW and processed in Lightroom 4.

Finchapalooza in my backyard
I got a finch feeder for Christmas. Birds are all over the feeder, but the real benefit is that birds first hang out in an apple tree near the feeder -- and the apple tree is much more photogenic.
Los Angeles skyline at sunset, part 3
I took the above pair in Elysian Park on Friday evening -- I haven't been able to get out of town much lately, so I've been scouting some urban landscapes. This vantage point is certainly better than the one I posted the other day and provides a more encompassing view than this one in the heart of downtown with a much closer view.
Confluence of Los Angeles River & Arroyo Seco
What is this? The big clutter that is northeast Los Angeles and beyond, as seen from Elysian Park on the north end of downtown L.A. Immediately below is the Los Angeles River and the confluence with one its main tributaries, the Arroyo Seco.
The 110 freeway crosses the river on the green bridges and then passes beneath the 5 freeway. Mt. Washington rises beyond. And the purplish mountains in the distance? Those are the mighty San Gabriel Mountains that loom over Southern California -- rising to 10,069 feet atop Mt. Baldy, meaning there's a remarkable 10,069-foot range in elevations in L.A. County.

Squirrelography
Squirrels are great. They're everywhere, they're bold and they're not terribly camera shy -- good subjects to practice focusing on!
